  • New Heat Pumps — More Efficient Than Ever
July 6, 2019

Heat pumps are an increasingly popular option for heating and cooling homes in Oro Valley, AZ. Today’s heat pumps aren’t like those of yesteryear, however. Depending on the type, heat pumps can reduce your home’s energy consumption between 30% and 60%. Here are a few reasons why heat pumps are more efficient than ever.

Multi-stage Compressor

A single-stage compressor has two settings: on and off. It either runs full blast at 100% or it doesn’t run at all. A multi-stage compressor runs full blast if temperatures are extreme. On milder days, it runs constantly, but at a lower setting.

How is this more efficient? The biggest energy use is when a compressor starts up. When the compressor runs longer on the lower setting, it not only uses less energy, but it also eliminates the excessive power consumption necessary on start-up. Longer run times also mean more consistent temperatures and better humidity control.

Variable Speed Motors

Variable speed motors operate on the same concept as multi-stage compressors. A single-speed motor is either on or off. A multi-speed motor can switch between several speeds. A variable-speed motor can run almost constantly, making small incremental adjustments based on information from indoor sensors. Variable speeds avoid the high energy demands of start-up and provide more precise comfort.

Is It Time to Upgrade to A More Efficient Heat Pump?

The U.S. Department of Energy suggests replacement if heat pumps are past their 10th birthday. By upgrading from an older unit with a 9 SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) to a newer 13-SEER model, you could save between $200 and $300 annually through reduced power consumption.

With the technological advancements in heat pumps over the years, it pays to check them out as a source for heating and cooling your Oro Valley home. If you’d like to learn more about the energy efficiency you can achieve with a new heat pump, give us a call today at 520-751-8888.
